SIERRA CANTABRIA RIOJA 2007
Rioja Redux

Rioja remains Spain’s best known region despite the wanton release of premium wines from a growing number of other areas.  Being so established, Rioja wines tend to be categorized as either “modern” or” traditional”.  Both camps contend with their own set of pros and cons: vivid fruit versus over-the-top/ elegant cherry, vanilla and leather versus dusty, raisiny fluid.  Sierra Cantabria, a favorite for so many vintages now, displays the best of the traditional style benefiting from modern methodology.  We all fell deeply for this resounding wine!

PALHA-CANAS BRANCO 2008
Bucking Branco

Think of what you know of Portuguese wine. And, for the moment, set aside thoughts of fortified dessert wines, rustic reds, and Vino Verde – for this is a wine-producing country of many faces. The crisp, refreshing Palha-Canas white blend has an uncanny ability to carry you away to the Atlantic Ocean-influenced vineyard sites from which it is sourced. For this reason it has impressed for several vintages as a front-porch-sipper and great food-wine of exceptional value.

CA DEL MONTE RIPASSO VALPOLICELLA CLASSICO 2005
Sibling Rivalry, Italian Style

In describing Valpolicella Ripasso, the term “baby Amarone” is often overused to inflate the description of mediocre wines. Not so in the case of brothers Umberto and Guiseppe Zaconte’s offering. Corvina, Rondinella, and Molinara grapes are harvested from vines of ages from 20-40 years old, whose age add depth and complexity to the wine. Following initial fermentation, the wine underwent a secondary fermentation on the dregs of grapes originally pressed to make Amarone (hence the diminutive “baby Amarone” moniker). The result: a fantastically rich wine at a fraction the price of its “big brother.”

SELLA & MOSCA LA CALA VERMENTINO 2008
Sardegna or Sardinia

Sardegna/ Sardinia, one of the fabled islands of the” Wine Dark Sea”, the second largest island in the western Mediterranean, is also home to one of the largest wine estates in Europe founded by Messrs. Sela & Mosca, two Piedmontese businessmen who played a prominent role in the Risorgimento (Italy’s 19th century unification movement). Despite the size of the winery, the quality of their estate grown wines is quite high. Named for a small, secluded cave fringed by violet colored thistles on the edge of the vineyards, La Cala is svelte & stylish, an alluring wine @ a bargain price.

HENRY FESSY BROUILLY 2007
Sensational Brouilly-Haha

Quintessential bistro beverage? Beaujolais for many. But, there is Beaujolais, and, there is cru Beaujolais. And there is the particular cru, Brouilly. Henry Fessy’s ebullient Brouilly brings great joy, is a fine alternative to a Pinot Noir, and makes for a masterful match with many dishes.

DOMAINE CABIRAU GRENACHE
Cathar-tic Grenache

In France’s wild, windy Roussillon region, the old fortress Queribus, one of the last Cathar refuges, dramatically looms over Domaine Cabirau’s dark soils. One of the U.S.’s finest wine importers, Dan Kravitz, purchased his piece of southern France heaven: vineyards, of course. Kravitz wisely employs the talented Serge and Tony to oversee the vines and winemaking, respectively. Domaine Cabirau Grenache deliciously demonstrates why varietally-labeled Grenache is growing in importance and popularity.

THELEMA SAUVIGNON BLANC 2008
Sancerre-Style Sauvignon Blanc: Drink What Thou Wilt

Which is appropriate in a 6 alcoholic degrees of separation sort of way. Sancerre, the famous region in the Loire Valley of France, produces the classic benchmark for Sauvignon Blanc. In the famous French writer, Loire-born Rabelais’ work, Gargantua and Pantagruel, Gargantua founds the Abbaye de Theleme. This utopian abbey’s philosophy includes "do what thou wilt". Thelema Winery, named after Rabelais’ Theleme, makes this stunning Sauvignon Blanc that reminds one of Sancerre in everything but its ultra-reasonable price.

Drink what thou wilt.

YEALANDS PINOT NOIR 2008
To Harm the Environment or Be in Harmony with it

That is a big question. "Sustainable" has become a bit of a buzzword in the wine industry fairly recently. Many New Zealand wineries have been subscribing to sustainability for years now as part of an initiative introduced in the late 1990’s. Yealands’ new winery is specifically designed to very high "green" and sustainable standards. We highly commend Yealands’ commitment to "tread lightly". We highly recommend Yealands’ for their princely Pinot Noir (priced pauperly).

To learn more about Yealands and its exciting story (don’t miss its "quadrupedal vineyard management" system) go to www. yealands.com.

PALAGETTO VERNACCIA DI SAN GIMIGNANO 2007
Tuscany's Towering White Wine

Vernaccia di San Gimignano. San Gimignano is one of Tuscany’s most famous hilltop towns. Its tall medieval towers reflect a time when your tower was your power. Vineyards of the Vernaccia grape surround this town that contains a torture museum. Vernaccia was allegedly first recorded in 1276, probably, by someone in a tower who wasn’t being tortured.

BOOM BOOM SYRAH 2007
Believe It or Not:

Charles Smith claims he loves to drink wine on his website. Apparently, he also loves to make wine—wine that we love to drink. The proud imbiber, Mr. Smith, makes lots of different wines but specializes in the state’s emerging secret: fine Syrahs. His reasonably-priced Boom Boom Syrah succeeds where many syrahs have fizzled.

COMMANDERIE DE LA BARQEMONE ROSÉ 2008
A Small Sampling of Highly Recommended Dry Rosés
Epitomizes fine dry rosé from Provence with its crisp, crunchy strawberry and watermelon flavors accented with mild spice. Solid core and immense finesse, this delicious rosé lingers long on the palate.

Note: the cross on the label refers to the Knights Templar who, some centuries ago, built the “commanderie” at the winery location. Consistently one of our TOP rosés!

GURRUTXAGA TXAKOLI ROSADO 2008
A Small Sampling of Highly Recommended Dry Rosés
For those who thrive on the unusual, this Basque wine will thrill you. Frizzante for sure, a little froth quickly dissipates leaving one with scents of freshly picked strawberries. Strawberry pops up then a distinctive, scintillating bitter orange/unripe cherry flavor zips and dips across the palate. Incredibly vivacious, its alluringly lively way broadcasts in its remarkable length of flavor.
