Commanderie de la Bargemone Rosé 2009
Tempting Templar – As Sting might say: “Summer in a Bottle”
Founded by the Templar knights in the 13th century, Bargemore is among the foremost estates of the Coteaux d’Aix-en-Provence, a small fine wine district which officially gained its AOC status in 1985. The city of Aix-en-Provence was founded by the Romans in 123 BC. My wife, daughter & I arrived some years later while Danielle was attending the University of Aix. The main drag, Cours Mirabeau, is one of the great thoroughfares in Europe (think Comm Ave times four). Planted with double rows of plane trees, it's lined by seemingly thousands of fountains & cafés. Brasserie Les Deux Garcons is one of the most renowned - built in 1792 & frequented by the likes of Paul Cézanne, Émile Zola, Ernest Hemingway and Michael Gillen.

"This has long been one of France's most delicious rosés." - Robert Parker, Jr

Domaine la Manarine Cotes du Rhone Blanc 2009
La Manarine Cotes Du Rhone Blanc

When it comes to wine, so much of the fun of summer is in searching
out - and finding - delicious, refreshing alternatives to the
everyday, run-of-the-mill white wine varietals. What's more, we think
such wines should not only be able to be sipped on their own on the
patio - but also be able to stand up to a refreshing summer meal. Enter the phenomenally interesting and exciting Cotes du Rhone Blanc from Domaine la Manarine. Forged from equal parts of two Southern Rhone white grapes you've likely never heard of (Clairette and Bourboulenc), this wine is a fantastic explosion of aroma and flavor.

Ladera Sagrada Castelo do Papa 2009
Come to Papa

This amazingly vibrant white hails from Valdeorras in the autonomous region of Galicia in far northwestern “Celtic” Spain where the rebellious nature of the people spills over into their winemaking. Using a grape, Godello, normally reserved for blending, Castelo do Papa has created a unique wine using its own naturally occurring yeasts. Papa Godello does not undergo maloactic fermentation, consequently achieving greater aromatic expression & freshness. It is raised in stainless steel, its natural bracing acidity not over-powered by oak, leaving a perfect wine for hot summer weather. 90% of Ladera Sagrada’ vines are 25+ years old – some of the Godello grapes are over 40. I have not been able to find any info on the origins of the name, “Castelo do Papa”, but assume it translates to: “Castle of the Pope”.

CHATEAU SOUCHERIE ANJOU BLANC 2008
PEAR-LESS ANJOU
The Anjou area in France’s fabled Loire Valley recalls that bulbous pear and England’s Henri II, perhaps, not in that order. For we wine lovers, Anjou should now signify superb, dry, unoaked wine from Chateau Soucherie. The grape? Chenin Blanc. This is the other, other great white wine. The best dry Chenin Blanc usually comes from the region’s Savennieres appellation. Soucherie’s Anjou Blanc resembles a young, intense Savennieres but at half the price! Shame that Henri II isn’t around to enjoy this…on second thought…

COUSINO MACUL FINIS TERRAE 2007
THE ANDES EFFECT
The Andes Mountains have quite an effect, alright, especially, when beholding them from Cousino Macul’s vineyards in Chile. The sight is incredibly inspiring, needless to say. But for Cousino Macul, one of Chile’s oldest and finest wineries, the Andes provide more than just magnificent landscape. They supply water. Their cold air sifts down, beneficially cooling the vineyard: the Andes effect. The natural advantages conspire with the dedicated Cousino winemaking team to make the fabulous 2007 Finis Terrae, a brilliant combination of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. I remember 2007 well—it was just after harvest that I last stood in Cousino’s beautiful vineyards looking at the mountains.

Bodegas Barco de Piedra Tempranillo Ribera de Duero 2008
Duero Delivers
Ribera del Duero is a region of vineyards situated around the Duero river, which, as it flows west through Portugal, becomes the Douro, home to the vineyards that give rise to Port. Despite Rioja's bigger reputation, there are some splendid wines to be had in this region, usually based on the indigenous Tempranillo grapes, often over-delivering great wine @ a bargain price.

Domaine de la Guicharde Cuvee Genest Cotes du Rhone Villages Massif d’Uchaux 2007
Massive Massif
Zut Alors! Talk about the intermingling of wine & history. Arnaud & Isabelle’s Domaine Guicharde surrounds the ruins of the Derboux castle which was used as a refuge for the Cathars until it was destroyed in 1228 & the same vineyard was cultivated by the Romans with the famous Roman Way (Via Agrippa) going through it on its way to Lyon & Arles. And if that’s not enough, RP loves the winery: “Arnaud Guichard has burst on the scene with deliciously fruity, ripe, round & generous wines” & gives the domaine an excellent rating. – Wines of the Rhone Valley, Robert Parker

TRIMBACH RIESLING 2007
1626: A Wine Odyssey
For idyllic Alsace’s esteemed Trimbach family now verging on their 13th generation. We’re glad they’ve stuck around. Though Trimbach faithfully produces some of our favorite wines from Alsace, Trimbach’s current Riesling is an absolute knock-out. Not enough people know that Riesling can be full-bodied and damnably dry—the traditional Alsatian style. Enjoy this and the visions of villages clustered with colorful half-timbered houses will come and transport you to Alsace for the holidays.

ALATE TEMPRANILLO 2006
Alate - A Lot of Wine
The Tempranillo grape is the preeminent red wine grape of Spain. Tempranillo ripens well ahead of its frequent blending partner Grenache, thus the name (Temprano in Spanish means early). It’s most famous growing regions are Rioja and Ribera del Duero, but fine examples can be found from Toro to Navarra. In the day, Kosher meant sickly sweet, mostly mediocre wines (think Man, oh Manishewitz), but that is no longer the case as more & more kosher wines are available that are often quite good. The world of kosher wine is broad & varied from Champagne and fine Bordeaux to New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc and Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon as well as this beautiful Spanish Tempranillo.

ROEDERER BRUT PREMIER NV
SENSATIONAL CHAMPAGNE: PRICELESS…or better, LESS PRICE
Roederer Champagne’s history dates back to 1776 and they remain independent as a family-owned wine concern. Roederer embraces the fuller style, using 60% of the black grapes (Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier) and even matures small portions of wine in barrel. Roederer Brut Premier represents one of the tastiest non-vintage Champagne available, now available at a scandalously low price. This is one brut you want at your table with great frequency.
