La Cartuja Priorat 2009
Peter Piper Picked a...Priorat Try a Google search for “Priorat wine” – you’ll find the median price of the advertised bottles that appear in results to be $49.99. Welcome to the world of Spain’s northeastern viticultural gem of Priorat where the realities of limited land and unique slate soils combine to create fabulously expensive (though admittedly fabulous) wines based largely on Garnacha. Don’t let the humble sale price tag of La Cartuja fool you. This is no cheap imitation – but, rather, an incredible wine for the money. And, oh yes – it’s a great way to introduce oneself to one of the world’s famed wine regions – without having to dole out $50. |

Schloss Vollrads 2009
The Real Rheingold Given gold’s increasing value, there may well be renewed interest in finding the Rheingold--the mythical treasure hidden somewhere in Germany’s Rhine River. But the real Rhine-gold isn’t buried in the bottom of the mighty Rhine. The real treasure is found growing along the Rhine. Yes, vineyards which in turn produce the riveting wines of the Rheingau. Gold you can drink.
The venerable Schloss Vollrads’ earliest wine record dates back only to 1211. Talk about keeping receipts. Anyway, I’m still amazed that I can offer a wine from this renowned estate at such a great price. This is the liquid gold to buy. Costs less per ounce and tastes better. |

Paitin Barbaresco 2006
Barbaresco Buy of 2010 Azienda Agricola PAITIN can boast a wine-making history back to 1796. The winery introduced its first Barbaresco in 1893. Barbaresco is one of Italy's three great "B" wines (Barolo and Brunello being the others). Like Barolo nearby, it's made from the noble Nebbiolo grape. The Paitin Barbarescos I recently tasted bedazzled my palate. The stupendously low prices absolutely stunned me. I recovered in time to purchase some PAITIN BARBARESCO "SERRA" 2006 for the many Italian red wine idolizers.

Chateau Le Sartre Blanc 2008
Sartre- A Graves Situation While the serious existentialist Sartre now inhabits a grave, Chateau Le Sartre happily exists in Bordeaux’s Graves region. But, not all Graves are created equal. The choicest area, Pessac-Leognan, earned its own appellation controlee in 1987. This is where one will find Chateau Le Sartre, nicely nestled amongst the most select Bordeaux estates there. 80% Sauvignon Blanc with 20% Semillon providing extra richness and complexity, Chateau Le Sartre more than hits the mark, serving as a sensational, full-bodied wine minus a full-bodied price tag.

King Estate Signature Collection Oregon Pinot Gris 2009
The King & I I have always admired & appreciated wines from Oregon, but have been reluctant to bring them in to the store because of their high prices points – but King Estate proves to be a great exception. Wine aficionados can count on this winery to consistently produce Pinot Gris @ eminently affordable prices. King Estate has earned its highly deserved reputation as the golden standard & benchmark of American Pinot Gris.

Cave des Vignerons de Buxy Buissonnier Mercurey 2008
Not Your Father’s Mercurey The village of Mercurey in Burgundy’s Côte Chalonnaise produces mostly red wine from the Pinot Noir grape. Its best wines compare favorably with the great wines of the Côte d’Or but at a more attractive price. This light to medium weight wine has a lovely soft fruity Pinot character that is delicious to drink on its own as well as with lighter meats and even many fish dishes. Here’s a little French wine trivia for you: the grape "Pinot Noir" translates as “black pine”, named for the color. |

Domaine Dupeuble Père et Fils Beaujolais 2009
Deep Purple By the Glass WOW!! This is the real deal Beaujolais! If, like me, you’ve had your share of so-so, not exactly mediocre, but just not very jazzy Beaujolais, then you‘ve got to try this – you’d think you were drinking a higher end Cru or at the least a Beaujolais-Villages with a significantly higher price tag. Back in the early 80s, my wife & two eldest drove from Chamonix, Mount Blanc to Paris (about 275 miles) & naturally, I persuaded “la famille” to stop @ a few wine places along the way. We stopped in Romanèche-Thorins, the home of Georges Duboeuf (aka the King of Beaujolais), but how I wish we had stopped to see the three Dupeuble brothers who run a quality-conscious organic winery committed to making the finest Gamay possible. It is certainly no surprise that the family knows its craft so well; the Dupeubles have owned these vineyards since 1512. This 2009 vintage from Beaujolais is all the rage; anyone & everyone is talking about it, and for good reason. It is clearly the best in a long time from this region.
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate raves about the 2009 Beaujolais Vintage, "Beaujolais: Remarkable Riches and 2009 Richness." "The 2009 Beaujolais are gloriously generous and genuinely complex, as fine as any wines from this region in recent memory." - "the opportunity exists for what are routinely among the world's preeminent red wine values to become positively SENSATIONAL bargains in this great vintage!" |

Catena Chardonnay 2008
Audacious Argentine Once upon a time, there was a crazy man in Argentina who believed that his country could make world-class wines: Nicolas Catena. In the early 1990s (I cannot recall the exact year), Catena introduced his Chardonnay to select wine accounts. The wine accounts had to be “select” because the audacious Argentine priced his Chardonnay to sell for—GASP!—almost $15! Well, upon tasting this upstart Argentinean wine, my peers and I agreed that this easily rivaled fine $20 Chardonnays! I immediately embraced the Catena wines. Customers, however, tended to be more skeptical—until I pestered them enough to try it. Catena gradually became one of our most beloved and popular Chardonnays. Today, Nicolas Catena is a world-renowned figure in the wine trade. Almost two decades later, Catena Chardonnay remains my favorite new world Chardonnay to recommend in its price range (which has barely changed in that time). And, yes, it still beats many a $20 Chardonnay! |

Sancerre Domaine des Grandes Perriéres 2009
If The Flintstones Made a Wine... It's easy to see why Sauvignon Blancs from Sancerre represent, for so many folks, the apex of the grape's potential. Curious as to why? Just look to the fruits of husband and wife team Jérôme and Frédérique Guenaud's estate for a wonderful example. Their 24 acre property comprises sustainably-grown vines ranging from 3-30 years old on the clay and flint-rich soils of Sury-en-Vaux. With only 4,000 cases of the native yeast, stainless-steel fermented, sur-lie aged Grandes Perrières for the entire world to enjoy, we're fortunate to have access to this handcrafted beauty!

Argyle Willamette Valley Pinot Noir 2008
Northwest Passage to Pinot On a visit to Argyle's cellars, one hears one simple phrase repeated more than all others: "the grapes." “The grapes this”, “the grapes that.” To winemaker Rollin Soles, a fine glass of wine clearly begins in the vineyard. His team's painstakingly hands-on approach to careful vineyard management quickly becomes evident - as do the results of such dedication: well-balanced, exciting wine! Sourced from three vineyards (Lone Star, Knudsen, Stoller), Argyle's 2008 Willamette Valley Pinot Noir is an affordable example of what most agree to be Oregon's best vintage of the decade yet.

Inama Soave 2008
A dry, light white but not (fill in the blank) Wine Mad Libs? Cool idea, actually. No, simply fill in the blank with your choice of Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio or even Sauvignon Blanc. This request has increased exponentially as more of you exhaust your palate on the “same” wines while your palate demands that you expand the palette of flavors. I’m sourcing fabulous fresh, crisp, thrilling wines from Spain, Greece, Austria, and France which immensely broaden the flavor palette. Yet, when you ask me for “dry, light white but not…” I frequently find myself traipsing over to the Italian section totally inspired to show you one of Italy’s compelling, brilliantly-flavored, indigenous whites. My most recent, proud addition to this growing selection? INAMA VIN SOAVE CLASSICO, made in the Classico zone, the best Soave area, from Garganega grapes growing on approximately 30 year old vines. |

M. Chapoutier 2008
Make Music- Not Noise From the hills of Corbières to the Pyrénées mountains, Roussillon is the sunniest region in France, overlooking Banyuls & the Mediterranean on the Spanish border. Maison M. Chapoutier, founded in 1808, has long enjoyed a reputation for honest, sturdy wines in the Rhône Valley, but since Michel took over in the early 90s, the firm has expanded & improved. Robert M. Parker, Jr. has said Chapoutier's is the most significant jump in quality he has ever seen. Since its founding, the motto of the M. Chapoutier winery has always been the ancient Latin proverb, fac et spera, “create and hope.” In many ways, these words of wisdom are good advice for the winemaker in general: work hard and hope for the best. Here’s a quote from M. Chapoutier that best exemplifies his winemaking philosophy: "When I started, I wanted to make powerhouse wines, but that's making noise, not music. Now my aim is to make elegant wines with long finishes." The Domaine is located about as close as you can be to Spain, but still be located in France, with a great deal of history related to the Knights Templar, and the Cathar movement, hence the stylized “T” in the title of the Domaine shaped like the Knights Templar Cross.
Listed #75 in Wine Spectator's Top 100 Wines of 2009. |

Chateau Haut Vigneau 2006
In-The-Know Chateau Chateau Haut Vigneau is one of those wines you are thrilled to have discovered, and, then hope that nobody else does. Through the years I’ve witnessed some dearly undervalued, high quality Chateaux suddenly rocket with ratings or some PR and whoa, Cheval-y sudden demand, exploding prices. Two factors (amongst others) definitely contribute to Haut Vigneau’s excellence:
1.) it’s from Pessac Leognan, one of Bordeaux’s premiere quality appellations 2.) it’s owned by Eric Perrin who also owns the extremely prestigious Chateau Carbonnieux Eric Perrin basically developed the historic property from scratch (well, and vines) some years ago. Majority Cabernet Sauvignon complemented by good percentage of Merlot all grown in the Garonnaise gravels special to this area. An exemplary Bordeaux experience. |

Planeta La Segreta Rosso 2008
Italian Wine Secret No secret that Sicily has produced wine for multiple millennia, but, until more recently, finding really fine red wines smacked of a covert quest. Enter quality-ambitious winemakers like Planeta and a good dose of the Nero d’Avola grape. Exit with some ravishing red wine. Planeta’s La Segreta Rosso won’t be the secret red for long if we have anything to do with it.

Domaine Parize Givry Vielles Vignes 2008
Real Red Burgundy Really Good Ridiculously Low- priced Can't help it! Keep finding these brilliant little red Burgundies from the Givry appellation. A major culprit serving up these Burgundian beauties is Domaine Parize (or is that Domaine Paradise?) And now, Parize is responsible for providing what must be the BEST BURGUNDY buy out there with its Givry Vieilles Vignes (old vines).
We are huge (but not corpulent) advocates of Pinot Noir with fish and other light fare. The best Pinot Noir with food? A fine red Burgundy, thank you very very much. Ludicrously low-priced by the bottle, at the case price, you have REAL RED BURGUNDY for your summer house wine. |
