It's easy to see why Sauvignon Blancs from Sancerre represent, for so many folks, the apex of the grape's potential. Curious as to why? Just look to the fruits of husband and wife team Jérôme and Frédérique Guenaud's estate for a wonderful example. Their 24 acre property comprises sustainably-grown vines ranging from 3-30 years old on the clay and flint-rich soils of Sury-en-Vaux. With only 4,000 cases of the native yeast, stainless-steel fermented, sur-lie aged Grandes Perrières for the entire world to enjoy, we're fortunate to have access to this handcrafted beauty!Quote
The first whiff delivers classic Sancerre notes of flinty minerality (Sancerre's soil does, literally, contain flint deposits!). These are immediately followed, however, by a richness of fruit which makes this wine so distinctive: lemon, melon, and a gentle amount of gooseberry. The full body promised by the nose is delivered by the palate: gooseberry develops into a seductive richness. The slightest touch of grass follows, and perfectly-bright acidity leaves one's mouth watering for more. An incredibly well-balanced Sancerre, the perfectly-weighted finish goes on...and on... and... you get the point – delicious!
