Wine Specifics
VARIETAL: Godello
REGION: Spain
WINE TYPE: White Wine
DRINK YEARS: over the next three years

This amazingly vibrant white hails from Valdeorras in the autonomous region of Galicia in far northwestern “Celtic” Spain where the rebellious nature of the people spills over into their winemaking. Using a grape, Godello, normally reserved for blending, Castelo do Papa has created a unique wine using its own naturally occurring yeasts. Papa Godello does not undergo maloactic fermentation, consequently achieving greater aromatic expression & freshness. It is raised in stainless steel, its natural bracing acidity not over-powered by oak, leaving a perfect wine for hot summer weather. 90% of Ladera Sagrada’ vines are 25+ years old – some of the Godello grapes are over 40. I have not been able to find any info on the origins of the name, “Castelo do Papa”, but assume it translates to: “Castle of the Pope”.

Quote
Lively white with great aromatics. Presents a nose of fruits & flint or slate, fresh lime & a hint of salinity? – (could be dreaming here as I was tasting on the beach in Magnolia). Zesty & refreshingly vibrant on the palate, yet with round & full-bodied mouth feel. Thriving with super savory flavors of melon, pineapple and a lively refined base of minerality while soft tannins lead the way for a cool, long finish. Drink over the next three years.
