A severe deep freeze, besides destroying lives, decimated vines in France’s western Loire Valley. After such a fearsome fright—no vines, no wines!—frost resistant grapes were favored for cultivation, like, for example, the Melon de Bourgogne. Three hundred years later, it provides us Muscadet, one of France’s classic dry whites. We very much prize it for being:
VERY DRY
UNOAKED
LIGHT (and incredibly refreshing) maybe because…
Only 11.5% alcohol!

Immediately recalls the fresh, pure scent of a sea breeze. Fleeting scents of lemongrass, lime and even fresh fennel flit by. On the palate, tastes and feels like a tight, sublime citrus current streaming over small stones. Zesty, chalky, lightening-bright texture makes it all happen. Refined finish leaves a sensation of that delightfully tangy sea breeze.
OUTSTANDING DRY LIGHT WHITE.
Food Pairing: Legendary with oysters, but also other shellfish, sushi, light-medium fish, seafood pastas, salads, simple poultry, fresh, sassy cheeses.

OK - what we have here is the same grape in three different languages. Don’t blame Berlitz. Blame history, and, geography for good measure. Two “provinces” compose Italy’s most northern region, Trentino Alto-Adige. In the upper part, Alto Adige, bordered by Austria and historically controlled by powerful Austrian and the like ruling enterprises, German signs and language still predominate.
So, like a road sign in Alto Adige, Josef Hofstatter uses both the German and Italian to label his wine.
The German WEISSBURGUNDER grape=the Italian PINOT BIANCO grape:
“Weiss” (white) + “Burgunder” (of Burgundy)= “Pinot” (Burgundy’s famous grape family) + “Bianco” (white)
If Napoleon had his way, Hofstatter would probably have to include the French name, PINOT BLANC, on the label.
Weissburgunder/Pinot Bianco/Pinot Blanc is a genetic mutation of prolific big daddy, Pinot Noir, otherwise known as Spatburgunder and Blauburgunder in Germanand Austrian. Alas, that’s a discussion for another day---before the Rapture with any luck. All you have to remember from all this etymological chatter : the wine is drop-dead gorgeous. It's a creamy, full-bodied gustatory delight that you should get a hold of as soon as humanly possible! We can help you with that.
Color of straw-yellow with hint of green - a scintillating nose of peach, nectarine & white mountain flowers. The mouth feel is rich & full-bodied. Living the Dolcetto Vita merely requires…good, honest, delicious Dolcetto wine. Such a Dolcetto transforms the simplest into the finest, the modest into unexpected indulgence. Dolcetto comes from Piedmont, Italy. It ripens before Nebbiolo (the grand grape of Barbaresco and Barolo). So, it’s harvested early and ready to consume sooner. It’s the wine more likely found on the typical Piedmontese table—and with good reason. Done right, like the spot on FONTANAFREDDA DOLCETTO BRICCOTONDO, it’s flavor-pure, light-medium in body, agreeably vivacious, and altogether, wonderfully versatile.
No fat, no oak, no liquid candy here.
Considering that one of FONTANAFREDDA’s owners is also a partner in EATALY, is it such a surprise that this Dolcetto is such a perfect food partner?
Ebullient purple hue. A waft of roast is quickly surpassed by fresh, transcendent scents of berry, violet and blackberry just plucked off the bush. Delectable, vibrant raspberry, blackberry and cherry flavors frolic on the palate. Immensely lively, bright and happy with fresh fruit acidity, finely structured. The rousing finish lengthens with each sip.
Serve slightly chilled.
Food Pairing: Fish, pasta, pizza, poultry, pork, ribs, salami/sausage, lasagna, nice Italian cheeses.

| The Sierra de Cantabria mountains are not just a spectacle to see, oh no; they are also a great place to grow exquisite grapes that make delicious wines as well.Founded in 1967, the Campo Viejo, or “old field” wine cellar was built on a plateau with majestic views of the Ebro Valley in the heart of La Rioja, Spain’s most prestigious growing region. In fact, back in Roman times, plots of land in the region were given as gifts to the Roman legion. It is here that the different varieties grown transmit the special and distinguished Rioja character found in each bottle of wine. Each grape varietal, Tempranillo, Graciano, and Mazuelo, combine to exhibit structure, balance, and character, making a truly enjoyable drinking experience. | |
Wonderful aromas of roasted plums, wild cherries, blackberries and crushed herbs really draw you in and invite you to taste what is truly a rich and deep wine. This Rioja spends 2 years in oak barrels and a year aging in the bottle, exhibiting cedary oak flavors with hints of cocoa and spices. The soft and generous finish just makes you long for one more sip; surely a great companion to a night of great conversation with friends.
Food Pairing: All types of meat and game, wild mushrooms, roasts and mature cheeses.
