WOW!! This is the real deal Beaujolais! If, like me, you’ve had your share of so-so, not exactly mediocre, but just not very jazzy Beaujolais, then you‘ve got to try this – you’d think you were drinking a higher end Cru or at the least a Beaujolais-Villages with a significantly higher price tag. Back in the early 80s, my wife & two eldest drove from Chamonix, Mount Blanc to Paris (about 275 miles) & naturally, I persuaded “la famille” to stop @ a few wine places along the way. We stopped in Romanèche-Thorins, the home of Georges Duboeuf (aka the King of Beaujolais), but how I wish we had stopped to see the three Dupeuble brothers who run a quality-conscious organic winery committed to making the finest Gamay possible. It is certainly no surprise that the family knows its craft so well; the Dupeubles have owned these vineyards since 1512.
This 2009 vintage from Beaujolais is all the rage; anyone & everyone is talking about it, and for good reason. It is clearly the best in a long time from this region.
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate raves about the 2009 Beaujolais Vintage, "Beaujolais: Remarkable Riches and 2009 Richness." "The 2009 Beaujolais are gloriously generous and genuinely complex, as fine as any wines from this region in recent memory." - "the opportunity exists for what are routinely among the world's preeminent red wine values to become positively SENSATIONAL bargains in this great vintage!"

Deep, bright, purple color ushering in strikingly forward aromas of purple flowers & fresh fruit. A tasty, zesty wine glass full of fresh raspberry, strawberry, black cherry & blueberry flavors balanced with a bracing minerality. This wine is like a precocious young student – very bright, not a bit shy, and brimming with confidence. The fresh squirt of acidity makes for the quintessential food wine.
Food Pairing: Perfect red wine match particularly for steamed mussels but also for roasted chicken, seafood, salads & almost anything else. Drink on the beach with no food at all, just some good friends, or, perhaps just the beagle.

Catena Chardonnay 2008 Audacious Argentine
|
Regular: $16.99 Sale: $14.99 Case: $168.00

Once upon a time, there was a crazy man in Argentina who believed that his country could make world-class wines: Nicolas Catena. In the early 1990s (I cannot recall the exact year), Catena introduced his Chardonnay to select wine accounts. The wine accounts had to be “select” because the audacious Argentine priced his Chardonnay to sell for—GASP!—almost $15! Well, upon tasting this upstart Argentinean wine, my peers and I agreed that this easily rivaled fine $20 Chardonnays! I immediately embraced the Catena wines. Customers, however, tended to be more skeptical—until I pestered them enough to try it. Catena gradually became one of our most beloved and popular Chardonnays. Today, Nicolas Catena is a world-renowned figure in the wine trade.
Almost two decades later, Catena Chardonnay remains my favorite new world Chardonnay to recommend in its price range (which has barely changed in that time). And, yes, it still beats many a $20 Chardonnay!

Swirl, sniff—hey, who snuck an expensive white Burgundy into the glass? Really, the nose is a ringer for Chardonnay hailing from an illustrious old world appellation. The sumptuous scents parlay on the palate into flavors like peach, hazelnut, spice, and even a light trailing honeyed note. Initially. Then white peach and crisp apple emerge. So incredibly integrated and superbly balanced that the opulent, melt-in-the-mouth texture glides lithely along. Long, refined length of flavor.
SIMPLY, ONE OF THE BEST
Food Pairing: Lobster! Also, fish or poultry in white sauce, salmon, tuna, pork, fresh potato salad, creamy cheeses

Sancerre Domaine des Grandes Perriéres 2009 If The Flintstones Made a Wine...
|
Regular: $19.99 Sale: $16.99 Case: $192.00
|
|
 |
| It's easy to see why Sauvignon Blancs from Sancerre represent, for so many folks, the apex of the grape's potential. Curious as to why? Just look to the fruits of husband and wife team Jérôme and Frédérique Guenaud's estate for a wonderful example. Their 24 acre property comprises sustainably-grown vines ranging from 3-30 years old on the clay and flint-rich soils of Sury-en-Vaux. With only 4,000 cases of the native yeast, stainless-steel fermented, sur-lie aged Grandes Perrières for the entire world to enjoy, we're fortunate to have access to this handcrafted beauty! | |
The first whiff delivers classic Sancerre notes of flinty minerality (Sancerre's soil does, literally, contain flint deposits!). These are immediately followed, however, by a richness of fruit which makes this wine so distinctive: lemon, melon, and a gentle amount of gooseberry. The full body promised by the nose is delivered by the palate: gooseberry develops into a seductive richness. The slightest touch of grass follows, and perfectly-bright acidity leaves one's mouth watering for more. An incredibly well-balanced Sancerre, the perfectly-weighted finish goes on...and on... and... you get the point – delicious!
Food Pairing: Antipasto, scallops, oysters, asparagus, white fish, sushi. Soft cheeses, especially goat. Anything with a lemon-butter sauce!

Argyle Willamette Valley Pinot Noir 2008 Northwest Passage to Pinot
|
Regular: $25.99 Sale: $19.99 Case: $216.00

 |
| On a visit to Argyle's cellars, one hears one simple phrase repeated more than all others: "the grapes." “The grapes this”, “the grapes that.” To winemaker Rollin Soles, a fine glass of wine clearly begins in the vineyard. His team's painstakingly hands-on approach to careful vineyard management quickly becomes evident - as do the results of such dedication: well-balanced, exciting wine! Sourced from three vineyards (Lone Star, Knudsen, Stoller), Argyle's 2008 Willamette Valley Pinot Noir is an affordable example of what most agree to be Oregon's best vintage of the decade yet. | |
Such a delicate nose - classic Willamette Valley at its best! Upon a swirl of the glass waft upward notes of fresh strawberry kept in check by a pleasingly rich earthiness. A touch of gentle spice rounds out the nose into delightful elegance. The wine's medium-bodied weight on the palate is the perfect follow-through from the nose; strawberry continues, balanced by raspberry and a touch of bing cherry. Finishes so smoothly, and with enough structure and acidity to make it as great to pair with food as to sip on its own. A wonderful effort, and a steal of a high-class Pinot Noir!
Food Pairing: Food pairings: roast chicken, grilled salmon, filet mignon, mushroom risotto. Anything with classic herbs, especially rosemary! Soft cheeses (brie, camembert).
